Show me the money-yeah right.
I am having a difficult time coming up with a title for today's blog so I'll come back to that later. Last night I had the opportunity to sit on my club's scholarship review board. We raise money throughout the year for charity and we also award three 1000.00 scholarships. One scholarship goes to a Vocational Trade School student going to college, another goes to a high school senior going to college and the last goes to an adult continuing ed student.
All, I can say is wow! You would think that in the age of technology it wouldn't be such a huge problem to type their essay rather than write it in chicken scratch. Also, I remember having my guidance counselor and even my Senior language art teacher help me write my essay. These kids would go off on tangents everywhere. We had to figure if we were awarding the scholarship based on grades or based on community service. We figured that we would base it on a student who did well in school with outstanding community service above and beyond the 200 hours that is required to graduate. One student said "I believe that community service is a nice gesture." We all laughed over that one. There were also some very sad stories that unfortunately our 1000.00 scholarship won't even make a dent in repairing this child's life but we are looking into a different route for this young lady.
All in all, I must say that it was a huge honor to be able to chose the recipients of the scholarships but also a very eye-opening experience.
